Borgarnes is the nearest town, located on a peninsula at the shore of Borgarfjörður. It is the largest town in the Borgarbyggð municipality with a population of about 3800 inhabitants.
The town has restaurants, bigger supermarkets, cafés and the fascinating museum, the Settlement Center. There is also a lovely swimming pool with a steam bath, an ice bath and hot tubs.
Close by, along road nr. 1 is Baulan, a small petrol station and shop, that also has a restaurant and sells most necessities. In Borgarfjörður, you don't want to miss Reykholt, Deildartunguhver hot spring, and the lava waterfall Hraunfossar. Further deep into the fjord you will find caves around Húsafell, for example, Víðgelmir, the largest and most spectacular lava tunnel in Iceland.
