Hvolsvöllur has a supermarket, gas station, a coffee house, restaurants, pizzeria, liquor store, a public outdoor swimming pool (550 m. from the house), golf course (5 minutes' drive) and a health centre. You will find souvenir shops and an excellent ice cream shop.

The location of the house is ideal for excursions to many of Iceland's most famous sights: The volcano Hekla, mountain Búrfell, waterfall Þjófafoss, waterfall Tröllkonuhlaup, the Highlands of Landmannalaugar and Hrauneyjar. Hekla's wealth of pumice is one of a kind. The Hekla Centre (Heklusetur) at Leirubakki tells about the saga of Hekla and her eruptions throughout the centuries. Waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara and even to the Glacier lagoon. You can find different types of manmade caves in the area Rangárþing, some possibly 1.200 years old. It is only 25 minutes' drive to Landeyjahöfn for trips to Vestmannaeyjar.
