The small summer house area of Merkurlaut is located halfway between Selfoss and Flúðir. It is a very good location for day trips around South Iceland.
Selfoss, ca 20 km drive, is the largest town in South Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. The town is a centre of commerce and small industries with a population of ca 8.000. There are many shops, restaurants, supermarkets and an outdoor geothermal swimming pool.
The small community of Flúðir, ca 30 km drive, is known for its greenhouses, geothermal cultivation and close proximity to Geysir and Gullfoss. The river Litla-Laxá runs through the village into the larger river of Hvítá, and it is overlooked by the mountain Miðfell. Flúðir has also become a popular tourist destination because of the Secret Lagoon, a geothermal pool.
