Ásbyrgi - the Shelter of the Gods - is located in Jökuslárgljúfur canyon. It is located approximately 38 kilometres east of Húsavík on the Diamond Circle road.
According to Norse mythology, it was the god Óðinn who rode his 8-legged horse Sleipnir in the area, and one of its hoofs left the deep mark that is now known as Ásbyrgi canyon. The horseshoe-shaped depression is part of the Vatnajökull National Park and measures approximately 3.5 km in length and is over 1 km wide.
Nearby is Gljúfrastofa with an exhibition about geology. There is also a petrol station and a small grocery store, which sells food and souvenirs.
