Along the eastern shore of the Lagarfjót lake is the biggest forest of Iceland, Hallormsstaðaskógur, which contains a big tree collection. There is also a camping site. In Fljótsdalur valley you will also find a few smaller forests, for example, Eyjólfsstaðaskógur and Úlfsstaðaskógur. Both are popular among hikers
Skriðuklaustur, a mansion of a famous Icelandic author Gunnar Gunnarsson is only 25 km away. Its name comes from an old monastery from the 16th century, and you can enjoy art exhibitions and cultural events. We recommend Café Klausturkaffi that is inside the dining room of the old mansion. Nearby one can explore an archaeological excavation of the former monastery.
Egilsstaðir, the capital of the east, is around 17 minutes drive away. It is situated at the northern part of the Lagarfljót river and is the largest settlement of the Eastern Region with ca 2500 inhabitants. It has everything from gas stations, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, and a swimming pool.
